MORGANTOWN – After suffering a fifth one-run loss on Tuesday, the Morgantown High baseball team turned around 24 hours later and put on its best offensive performance of the season.
MHS earned a decisive 19-4 victory over crosstown rival University Wednesday evening on Shilling Field at Mylan Park, thanks to some scorching hot offense.
Weston Mazey led the Mohigans, going 4 for 4 at the plate with four RBI, five runs scored, and two extra-base hits. Six players earned multihit games for MHS, with Mason Bowers, Lincoln Thorton, and Jackson Bredeson adding three each.
Maddox Boggs earned the win on the bump, tossing five innings with seven hits and four earned runs. He walked four batters and also earned four strikeouts.
Max Cash led UHS with a pair of hits, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
“Definitely a good way to bounce back after another one-run loss last night,” MHS head coach Pat Sherald said. “It starts on the mound, and Maddox gave us a good outing and competed for us. We came out offensively and had the best night of the season so far. This is what we’re capable of when we put all three phases of the game together, and it’s what we’ve been waiting to do.”
Sherald’s club scored its 19 runs on 21 hits in the contest and scored at least one run in every inning. The first three runs came with two outs in the top of the first as Mazey scored on a double by Bredeson. Thornton singled in the next at-bat to score two more.
Three more runs were added in the second as two groundballs produced two runs before Mazey stole home to give MHS a 6-0 lead.
UHS found its first hit in the bottom of the second as Grant Alexander singled, but a double play ended the inning.
“We just have to show back up tomorrow and forget about today,” UHS head coach Travis Renner said. “We have three of the biggest games on our schedule this weekend, which means more opportunities to prove what we can do.”
MHS added six more runs in the third, four coming in one swing of the bat as Mazey stepped to the plate with the bases full. He laced a shot to right field that resulted in a bases-clearing triple and advanced to score as the throw to third went out of play.
Mazey has collected seven hits in his last eight at-bats through two games.
“More than anything, it’s his leadership that he brings to the team that is most impactful,” Sherald said of Mazey. “I met with the team about approach, and he was a guy we brought up about never having to question how he’s going about his business or preparation. He’s been swinging well for us recently.”
UHS added its four runs in the fourth inning as Brock Shuba hit a two-run triple and Cash sent a no-doubter over the left field fence.
But the Mohigans put up another six-spot in the fifth to slam the door on any chance of a UHS comeback.
Both teams will return to action on Friday. MHS meets Urbana (Md.) while the Hawks will battle Spring Valley and Hurricane.
