John Marshall Monarchs vs. University Hawks
Monday, May 10, 2021 - 5:00pm - Shilling Field - Morgantown, WV
Late Rally Falls Short For Hawks
MORGANTOWN – This time the comeback didn’t happen.
On Monday at Shilling Field, the University High School baseball team followed a familiar pattern. The Hawks found themselves behind a visiting team, 7-0, only to rally for six runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 7-6.
Unfortunately for UHS (6-4) that was as close as it would get on the way to a 9-6 defeat at the hands of John Marshall.
The fifth-inning eruption started when Casey Smith hit a two-run double to left field and then Noah Braham followed with an RBI single. Aaron Forbes plated one more run on a double to left field and then Drew Herter slugged a double to left center field for two more runs.
But that elusive tying run could not be found as the Monarchs scored two more runs in the top of the seventh before closing the door in the bottom of the inning.
Avante Neal (0-2) pitched the first three innings and allowed six runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Zach Harman pitched the next three innings with one run surrendered on one hit with one strikeout before Dylan Henry finished the game with one run allowed on two hits with one strikeout.
Evan Smith and Chase Edwards each added a single to the University offensive cause while Herter added another double.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Bridgeport for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
