Hawks Grab Walk Off Win Over B-U
MORGANTOWN – A walk ended up being a walk-off for the University baseball team.
Jake Spearen drew a bases-loaded free pass with no outs in the eighth inning to give UHS (10-16) a 5-4 win over Buckhannon-Upshur on Wednesday night.
The come-from-behind, extra-inning victory puts the Hawks into Thursday’s Class AAA sectional championship against rival Morgantown. UHS must win two games to claim the sectional crown while the Mohigans need just one victory.
While Spearen’s walk was big, the Hawks don’t even get to the extra frame without some seventh-inning heroics. On this night those heroics came from Max Kitzmiller, Kevin Smith and Clay Maholic.
After collecting just one hit through six innings against the Bucs’ starter, it was Kitzmiller who got the offense going in the seventh as he dumped a two-run single into left field to cut the lead to 4-2. Smith then scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to one and Kitzmiller tied the game when he scored on a passed ball.
Maholic provided a highlight of his own on defense in the top of the eighth as he caught a fly ball in right field and then threw a strike to catcher Connor McDonough that ended with the Hawks cutting the go-ahead run down at the plate.
Then came Spearen’s walk for the win.
Casey Smith started the game on the mound and allowed four runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts. Spearen picked up the win as he pitched one inning with one hit surrendered.
The Hawks struggled on offense with just two hits – one by Kitzmiller and one by Spearen – but they did draw 13 walks in the contest.
Thursday’s sectional championship game will be played at Mylan Park and begins at 5 p.m.
