Hawks Figure Out The Right Formula In Latest Victory
MORGANTOWN – Dominating pitching and a potent offense are usually a good formula for a baseball victory.
On Tuesday, University High School got both ends of that equation on the way to a 13-2 win over Preston High School. The win extended the season for the Hawks (9-16) who staved off elimination in the Class AAA sectionals.
The pitching performance was turned in by sophomore Evan Smith who tossed four innings of no-hit baseball. He struck out six and didn’t allow a walk in his mound work. Jonathan Thompson pitched the final inning in the mercy-rule shortened contest. Thompson allowed two runs on four hits with one strikeout.
University scored one run in the first, six runs in the second and six more runs in the fourth.
Senior Kevin Smith had a big day at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, Clay Maholic slugged a pair of triples with two RBI while Evan Smith helped his cause with two singles in the contest. Cameron Musgrave added a double with one RBI while Casey Smith had a triple with one RBI. Aaron Forbes also had one RBI with Jake Spearen adding two RBIs with a single. Avante Neal and Matt Renner rounded out the 11-hit attack with each of them collecting a single.
The Hawks will try to extend their season on Wednesday when they host Buckhannon-Upshur in an elimination game at 6 p.m.
