Hawks Bounced By Bucs In Sectionals
MORGANTOWN – Four errors cost the University baseball team dearly on Monday.
The Hawks (8-16) dropped an 11-5 contest to Buckhannon-Upshur in the first round of Class AAA Sectional play. However, of the 11 runs that the Buccaneers scored only four of them were earned thanks to the four UHS miscues.
After falling behind 2-0, UHS rallied for a 3-2 lead when Jonathan Thompson and Jake Spearen scored on an error by the B-U first baseman. The go-ahead run was plated when Avante Neal scored on a balk by the pitcher.
But that would be the only lead the Hawks could find as the Bucs scored three runs in the third and then two more runs each in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning.
University scored its final two runs in the sixth as Aaron Forbes scored on a groundout by Matt Renner and Max Kitzmiller scored on a passed ball.
Perry Lillard was the losing pitcher as he tossed five innings with eight hits surrendered, two earned runs and two strikeouts. Evan Smith pitched one inning with two hits allowed and Jake Spearen allowed two runs on three hits.
Neal powered the UHS offense with three hits including a double while Casey Smith, Cameron Musgrave, Forbes, Kitzmiller and Spearen each had one hit.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday when they host Preston at 5 p.m. in an elimination game.
