Hawks Come Up Short in OVAC Semifinal

WHEELING – A sixth-inning rally wasn’t enough for the University baseball team on Saturday.

The Hawks (6-3) dropped a 7-5 OVAC semifinal tournament game to host Wheeling Park despite the four-run rally in the sixth inning.

Wheeling Park ran out to a 4-0 lead and held a 5-1 lead entering the sixth inning when UHS plated four runs. The Hawks took advantage of three walks in the inning along with singles by Avante Neal and Casey Smith to cut the score to 5-4 and then Drew Herter delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 5-5.

Unfortunately, UHS could not take the lead in the inning. The Patriots tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth and then held on in the seventh to advance to the OVAC championship game next weekend against Morgantown.

Evan Smith got the start on the mound as he pitched four innings with three strikeouts. Avante Neal (0-1) pitched the final two innings as he surrendered just two hits and struck out four.

Casey Smith led the UHS offense with two singles while Wenkai Campbell went 1-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Neal, Noah Braham, Aaron Forbes, and Chase Edwards each had a single. Herter, Forbes, and Musgrave each had one RBI.

The loss ends a five-game winning streak for the Hawks who return to action on Tuesday at Hampshire.
