Smith Dominates On The Mound As Hawks Get Revenge

CHARLESTON – Sophomore pitcher Casey Smith was darn near unhittable on Wednesday night.

In fact, Smith didn’t allow a hit for over five innings before surrendering his only hit of the ball game in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Smith’s pitching performance and a couple of timely hits helped University pick up a 2-0 win over host George Washington to finish the regular season and avenge an earlier loss.

The Hawks (8-15) played solid defense – with only two errors – behind Smith who finished with a seven-inning complete game shutout. Smith struck out three and walked only one while surrendering his only hit with two outs in the sixth.

University grabbed the lead in the second inning when senior Matt Renner hit a line-drive double to left field that scored Aaron Forbes for a 1-0 lead. The second run scored in the fifth inning when Avante Neal scored on an error by the first baseman.

Renner’s double along with doubles from Casey Smith and Evan Smith were the only hits the Hawks could muster in a pitching duel that featured just four hits.

Next up for UHS is Buckhannon-Upshur in first-round sectional play. The Hawks will host the game at 7 p.m.
