Hawks Rack Up Numbers, Beat Monarchs
MOUNDSVILLE – Double digits was the theme on Monday night for the University baseball team.
The Hawks scored 10 combined runs in the final three innings, collected 16 hits and senior pitcher Casey Smith punched out 11 batters in an 11-6 victory against host John Marshall.
With the score tied at 1-1 after four innings, UHS (3-2, 2-1 OVAC) scored two runs in the fifth when Smith drove a single to left field scoring brother Evan Smith and Chase Edwards. Then the Hawks added four more runs in the sixth with the big hit coming from Evan Smith on a home run to left field. UHS added four more runs in the seventh with Casey Smith driving in two runs on a single to left field.
On the mound it was Casey Smith who was very efficient through six innings. He allowed just five hits and no walks with the 11 strikeouts. Avante Neal and Connor McDonough combined to get the final three outs.
University’s offense was very impressive with Evan Smith and Edwards each collecting three hits in the contest to go along with three RBI. Casey Smith, Cam Musgrave and Drew Herter each added two hits in the contest with Casey collecting three RBI while Musgrave and Herter each had a double and one RBI.
Also adding hits for the Hawks were Avante Neal, Noah Braham, Aaron Forbes and Dylan Henry. Braham and Henry each had a double.
UHS returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Grafton at 4:30 p.m.
