Casey Pitches, Hits Hawks To A Victory
MYRTLE BEACH, SC – On Thursday, it was Casey at the bat and on the mound for the University baseball team.
Sophomore Casey Smith pitched six plus innings of eight-hit ball with five runs allowed and four strikeouts and then provided a three-run home run to seal a 7-5 victory over Hedgesville in the Mingo Bay Classic. The win ended a seven-game losing streak for the Hawks (6-13) and avenged an earlier 9-2 loss to Hedgesville.
Casey Smith was stellar on the mound for the Hawks as he allowed just one run through five innings pitched and watched as the UHS offense put three runs on the board in the fourth inning to claim a 3-1 lead. Those runs came when Hunter Cottrell drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Matt Renner and then Cameron Musgrave hit a line drive to center that scored Jake Spearen. Aaron Forbes closed the scoring when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Avante Neal.
But the action wasn’t over as Hedgesville tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth with two runs. However, this time the Hawks fought back with a four-run scoring outburst. Matt Renner singled to center that scored Clay Maholic and then Casey Smith provided the heroics with a three-run homer to left field.
Spearen pitched the final inning to pick up the save while Musgrave and Renner each collected to hits to pace the offense. Evan Smith added a double while Max Kitzmiller, Cottrell, Maholic and Spearen each had singles. Cottrell, Musgrave and Renner each had one RBI in the contest.
The Hawks return to play in West Virginia on Wednesday when they travel to Buckhannon-Upshur for a 6:30 p.m. contest.
