Thompson Tosses A Gem In Hawks’ Loss

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Senior Jonathan Thompson scattered five hits over five innings for University on Wednesday, but the Hawks couldn’t overcome three errors on the way to a 5-0 loss to Battlefield, Va.

It marks the seventh straight loss for the Hawks (5-13) and moves them to 0-3 in the Mingo Bay Classic.

Thompson allowed five runs in his mound work but only one of those was earned. He also walked four and struck out one. Jake Spearen pitched the final inning as he allowed no runs on one hit. The defense was led by Matt Renner who made several diving plays in the outfield and at second base.

University picked up four hits in the contest with Spearen, Kevin Smith, Hunter Cottrell and Aaron Forbes each hitting a single.

UHS returns to action on Thursday when it plays Hedgesville in the first round of a single-elimination tournament at 3:45 p.m.
