Nine Run Inning Dooms Hawks In Tourney Loss
MYRTLE BEACH, SC – For four innings, the University baseball team played right with the No. 2 ranked team in the state of West Virginia.
But in the end, St. Albans proved to be too much thanks to a nine-run fifth inning on the way to a 13-3 mercy-rule shortened win over the Hawks (5-11). This was the first game of UHS in the Mingo Bay Classic held at Myrtle Beach, SC.
After surrendering three runs in the top of the first inning, UHS responded with three runs of its own as Casey Smith scored when his brother, Evan, reached on a walk and then Kevin Smith provided the big hit with a pop-fly single that scored Hunter Cottrell and Clay Maholic.
Unfortunately, this would be the only scoring the Hawks could muster as St. Albans shut the door on any other scoring chances.
Cottrell did finish with two singles in the game while Avante Neal, Maholic, Kevin Smith and Matt Renner each had one single.
Casey Smith took the tough loss on the mound as he pitched the first four innings with four runs allowed on six hits and three strikeouts. Evan Smith finished the game off with one inning of work with five runs on two hits and two strikeouts. Kevin Smith also worked a portion of the fifth inning with four runs allowed on three hits.
The Hawks return to the field on Tuesday when they play Myrtle Beach High School at 6 p.m. in the second game of the tournament.
