Morgantown Mohigans vs. University Hawks
Tuesday, April 2, 2019 - 5:00pm - Shilling Field - Morgantown, WV
Mohigans Power Past Hawks
MORGANTOWN – A nine-run fourth inning proved to be the knock-out punch for Morgantown on Tuesday as it beat the University High School baseball team 17-2.
The Hawks (3-5) trailed 2-1 after the first inning as Clay Maholic hit a two-out line-drive single that scored Casey Smith. Unfortunately, that was all the offense UHS could muster until the fifth inning when Aaron Forbes slugged a double that scored Cameron Musgrave.
Senior Perry Lillard took the los on the mound as he gave up 10 runs, nine earned, walked five and struck out two in three and one-third innings of work. Matt Renner pitched one inning in relief as he surrendered seven runs – three of those earned – and scattered four hits. Jonathan Thompson pitched the final two thirds of the inning for UHS.
Musgrave and Forbes each had a double for UHS while Casey Smith, Hunter Cottrell and Maholic each had a single.
University struggled, at times, on defense with five errors in the contest.
The Hawks travel to Preston High School on Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
Rally Falls Short For JV Hawks
MORGANTOWN – A fifth-inning rally wasn’t enough for the University JV baseball team as it dropped a 6-3 contest to Morgantown on Tuesday.
The Hawks (2-6) trailed 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when they struck for a little two-out magic. Tyler Goodnight scored when Dylan Henry reached base on an error, Max Parow scored on a passed ball and then Tony Marsh provided the big hit with a double that scored Henry.
However, that was all the offense that UHS could muster despite a strong pitching performance by Henry who scattered eight hits over five innings of work and allowed just three earned runs. Marsh pitched one and two-thirds innings with two strikeouts while Parow struck out the only batter he faced.
Matt Bakos went 2-for-3 at the plate for UHS while Joey McBee, Parow and Isaiah Clevenger each had a single.
University returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Wheeling Park at 5 p.m.
