Tough Start Dooms Hawks

MORGANTOWN – Visiting Hedgesville scored seven runs in the first two innings on its way to a 9-2 win over University on Friday.

The Hawks (3-4) surrendered 13 hits in the contest as Sophomore Evan Smith took the loss on the mound. He pitched the first inning and two thirds with seven hits allowed and two strikeouts. Jake Spearen finished the game as he turned in a solid five and a third innings with six hits allowed and two strikeouts.

The offense was tough to find for UHS as it mustered just five hits. However, Hunter Cottrell was a bright spot with an RBI single in the third inning that scored Casey Smith. Freshman Aaron Forbes tacked on an RBI single in the sixth that scored Kevin Smith.

Cottrell was the only UHS player that collected more than one hit as he also added another single. Forbes, Clay Maholic and Casey Smith each had a single of their own.

The Hawks return to action on Tuesday when they host rival Morgantown at 5 p.m.

Hedgesville Powers Past JV Hawks

MORGANTOWN – A pair of home runs proved to be the difference on Friday night as Hedgesville beat the UHS JV baseball team 6-2.

Hedgesville hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and a three-run homer in the sixth inning on the way to the victory.

Tony Marsh (0-2) was the hard-luck loser for the Hawks (2-5) on the mound as he left the game trailing 1-0. Marsh scattered three hits in the three innings and struck out three as well. Logan Lyons relieved Marsh on the mound while Max Parow turned in two and two-thirds of work and Joey McBee finished the game with one inning pitched.

UHS struggled on offense as it collected just four hits. Marsh collected the only RBI of the contest with a single while Vinnie Pinn added a double. Connor McDonough and Parow also had singles in the contest.

The Hawks return to action on Tuesday when they host Morgantown at 5 p.m.
