Spearen Sparks Hawks To Walk-Off Win
MORGANTOWN – When the UHS baseball team needed a big hit on Thursday, they turned to Jake.
He wasn’t from State Farm and he wasn’t wearing khakis.
No, this was junior second baseman, Jake Spearen, and he delivered a line drive single that helped the Hawks picked up a 7-6 win over visiting Hampshire in 12 innings.
Spearen’s two-out knock capped a wild contest that saw dominating pitching and clutch hitting through-out the game.
University (3-3) Held a 4-0 lead through four innings as starter Perry Lillard had a strong performance. He eventually finished with 6 and one-third innings of work, scattering just four hits and striking out four.
The offense scored two runs in the first when Cameron Musgrave singled home Casey Smith and Hunter Cottrell scored on an error by the left fielder. UHS scored two more runs in the third when Clay Maholic scored on a double by Cottrell and then Kevin Smith drove home Cottrell on a fielder’s choice.
But Hampshire wouldn’t go away quietly as it chipped away at the lead with one run in the fifth, one run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to tie the contest at 4-4.
The two teams remained tied until the 11th when Hampshire grabbed a 6-4 lead in the top of the inning. That lead didn’t last long, as Casey Smith slugged a double to right field that scored Evan Smith and Jonathan Thompson.
Then came Spearen’s heroics in the bottom of the 12th. Kevin Smith led the inning off by reaching on an error and then advanced on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Evan Smith and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Renner. Kevin Smith scored when Spearen laced the 2-0 pitch to right field.
Thompson picked up the win on the mound for the Hawks as he pitched the final four innings and allowed just one hit. Evan Smith also saw time in relief with one and two thirds of work.
Evan Smith, Lillard, Cottrell and Casey Smith each had a double in the game while Cottrell also slugged a triple. Casey Smith, Musgrave and Spearen each had two hits; Cottrell and Evan Smith both had three hits while Maholic and Lillard both had one.
The Hawks return to action on Friday when they host Hedgesville at 5:30 p.m.
JV Hawks Grab Second Win
MORGANTOWN – An eight-run first inning helped the UHS junior varsity baseball team pick up an 11-8 victory over visiting Hampshire on Thursday.
The victory for the Hawks (2-4) ended a four-game losing streak.
University scored its eight runs on just three hits in the first inning as they took advantage of six walks. Freshman Isaiah Clevenger provided the big hit with an RBI double down the left field line.
The Hawks added one more run in the second when Drew Herter hit an RBI double to left field that scored Connor McDonough. UHS also added two runs in the fourth when Seth Coombs had an RBI single that scored Max Parow and Herter added an RBI single that scored Matt Bakos.
On the mound it was McDonough (1-0) who picked up the victory as he pitched the first two innings and allowed just two hits and struck out two. Herter picked up the save with one and two-thirds of work while Logan Lyons and Tony Marsh both saw time on the mound. Lyons had two strikeouts and scattered four hits in his only inning.
Herter powered the offense as he went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Clevenger, Marsh and Coombs each had a hit and an RBI while Bakos also added a single.
The Hawks return to action on Friday when the host Hedgesville at 5:30 p.m.
