Wednesday, March 27, 2019 - 5:00pm - Shilling Field - Morgantown, WV
Rough Seventh Inning Costs UHS
MORGANTOWN – A sixth-inning rally wasn’t enough on Wednesday as the University High School baseball team dropped a 10-5 decision to visiting Parkersburg South.
The Hawks (2-3) trailed 4-0 after three and a half innings but then cut the lead to 4-3 after four thanks to Casey Smith and Hunter Cottrell both scoring on an error and Kevin Smith scoring when Jake Spearen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
UHS then tied the score in the sixth at 5-5 when Clay Maholic hit a triple to right field that scored Avante Neal and then Maholic scored on a single by Casey Smith.
However, that rally wasn’t enough as Parkersburg South scored five runs in the top of the seventh and then held UHS scoreless in the bottom for the victory.
Kevin Smith was the starting pitcher for UHS as he pitched the first four innings and scattered seven hits and walked just two. Casey Smith took the loss in relief as he pitched two innings with three strikeouts. Maholic and Jonathan Thompson both also saw time on the mound with Thompson picking up a strikeout in one inning of work.
Maholic, Casey Smith and Cottrell each had two hits in the game with Smith and Maholic each grabbing one RBI and Cottrell slugged a double.
University returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Hampshire at 4:30 p.m. for senior night celebrations.
